Canberra German Week is launching in the Capital this year!
Coming for the first time to Canberra this October will be another series of events showcasing the rich spectrum of collaborations between Germany and Australia. We’ve had plenty of years of Oktoberfest with the Harmonie German Club, but this year we will show that being German is more than just “Bier und Lederhosen”. We are delighted to present you the highlights across education, business and economy, science and innovation, arts, culture and most of all inspiration, fun and networking. We will bring you established events such as the Science and Innovation Day with the latest updates on joint research outcomes as well as the Business Day with the fresh and brand new “iGABA – the innovative German Australian Business Alliance”.
The Arts Evening has made space for an exploration of the impact of artificial intelligence on learning a foreign language and bilingualism while the crowd pleasing Oktoberfest at the Harmonie German Club will showcase you a mini Bavaria. The language competition for students will take a new format, the Swiss Film Night will be there to satisfy the cravings of Swiss cinephiles and you can enjoy iconic locations around the city lit up in the colours of the German flag on Tuesday, 3 October. The Austrian Community Day on 27 October in Harmonie German Club will be our grand finale of our festival, where all ACT community members, young and old, are invited to join us for games, fun, music, food and much more entertainment!

How did we get here
Brisbane’s German Honorary Consul Prof Michael Rosemann is a Professor for Innovation Systems and the Director of the Centre for Future Enterprise at the Queensland University of Technology. From a young age, Michael was fascinated with bridges. In fact, his very first dream job was to become an engineer with a specialisation in designing and building bridges, a Brückenbauingenieur.
He would have never thought, that he would one day be building bridges between our two nations – Australia and Germany – as well as bridges between the various communities that make up both our wonderful countries. (Image 2017 “Oktoberpole”)
From idea to reality
Just a month after his official welcome in June 2016, Prof Michael Rosemann proposed to his office located in the Gold Tower across from the beautiful Eagle Street Pier, the idea to create a German Week covering significant topics such as Science, Business, History and Culture… Within just eight weeks, a vague idea became reality. A new multicultural event was born on 2 October 2016: Brisbane German Week #1.
Since then, and over the last eight years, Brisbane German Week has become an integral part of Brisbane’s event calendar. In fact, in many cases the event has scaled up far beyond Queensland. For example, in 2019 the language competition became an Australia-wide event (and has been since) and since 2020 we have been hosting a national Science and Innovation Day (AGRN). Since 2022, we are delighted that Adelaide German Week as well as the Australia Week in Munich have been established. In 2024, Melbourne and Canberra are also getting creative and joining the forces of Australia’s German Weeks! DAS IST DOCH WUNDERBAR!
